On-campus Accommodation

The Zijing International Student Apartments of Tsinghua University provide three types of dormitory rooms to the international students: single room (private bedroom and bathroom), RMB 80/day; AB room (private bedroom, shared bathroom), RMB 80/day/person; double room (two beds in one room, shared bathroom on each floor), RMB 40/day/person. Included in each room are bedclothes, air-conditioner, telephone, color TV, Internet access and furniture.

The apartments have a capacity of accommodating around 2000 international students, i.e, about 60% of the total studying at Tsinghua. For more details of the apartments, please visit Zijing International Student Apartments.

The General Reception Desk of Zijing International Student Apartments is in Zijing Apartment Building No. 19. It serves from 7:00 am to 23:00 pm. The service phone number: +86-10-5153 5500; Email: gaopei@tsinghua.edu.cn.

Because the number of on-campus apartment rooms is limited and can not meet the demands of all students to live on campus, the new students who have received the Admission Notice of Tsinghua University need to book the rooms in advance, following the date, time and procedurespecified in the Instructions of International Students Dormitory Application System of Tsinghua University which is sent out by ISO to you together with the admission materials package. The website of the booking system is http://www.thutraining.com.

Before online booking, please prepare a bank card (Visa, MasterCard, or China UnionPay) that is enabled to support online payment for the deposit (RMB 500) of a successful booking.

When you check in at the General Reception Desk, please show your Admission Notice and passport. You need to pay  RMB 200 as deposit and the rent for a semester. Bank card payment is accepted at the reception.

According to the law and the relevant policy, the Zijing International Student Apartments are only able to host foreign students who are registered in Tsinghua University. Neither the relatives or friends of students nor other persons are allowed to live in the apartments. Students living in the Apartments should comply with the administrative regulations. For instance, lighting fire, including using candles is strictly prohibited in the rooms; students are not allowed to host other people overnight in the rooms.

Off-campus Accommodation

If you do not successfully book a room in the on-campus apartments, you need to arrange off-campus accommodation also in advance. We are sorry that currently the University is not able to officially recommend off-campus housing information and housing agencies for your off-campus accommodation.

According to the experiences of our international students, many of them prefer to live in the apartments near the campus, such as Huaqing Jiayuan and Dongsheng Yuan, etc.  Some students choose to live far from the campus, because the rents might be much lower. The following links recommended by Tsinghua international students may help you search online for appropriate off-campus apartments:

You may need to ask some help from your Chinese Buddy or friends in Beijing. Please be careful when signing the contract or lease, since there may be hidden clauses.

When you live off campus, never forget to get a Registration Form of Temporary Residence issued by the local police station of your accommodation. Within 24 hours after you move in, please bring your passport and go to the local police station together with your landloard (or other authorized agency).

The Registration Form of Temporary Residence is another important certificate for your legal stay in China, aside from your passport and visa. Please keep it along with your passport. It is required for your application of new visa, visa extension, additional entry or residence permit.

Therefore, a special reminder is that before you sign for the contract or pay for the rental, do confirm that the owner of the apartment/house property is able to process the accommodation registration for you. Otherwise you will get into trouble of illegal stay. Moreover, you need to renew the your Registration Form of Temporary Residence if you have moved to another place, changed your passport or renewed your visa.

Campus View

Tsinghua Garden

Tsinghua Garden is architecturally unique. It preserves original architectural features over three centuries old. The garden retains a traditional Qing private garden design and style with painted corridors connecting every room. It has functioned as the university's head office for many years. Due to its distinctive characteristics, it has become a major attraction on campus.

The more popular name of the garden is Gong Zi Ting -- which in Chinese means H-Shaped House. Viewed from above, the central part of the house resembles the letter "H", with its two halls in the front and back connected by a short corridor in the middle.

The garden started out as the residence of a Qing emperor's brother's family. In the early days of Tsinghua School, founded in 1911, the garden was used as the school's first head office building. Student enrollment lists were posted on the wall at the front gate. For some years in its history, the east room in the front section was used as the Music Center, the west room as the teacher's reading room and the back section to accommodate distinguished foreign guests. The great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore stayed there when he visited China in 1924.

The student exchange program is applicable only to the students officially sent by the international partner universities of Tsinghua University under the student exchange Agreements or MOUs. These students need to select the "Exchange Students on University-Level Agreements/MOUs" section, and attach the approval or recommendation letter from their home universities. So, the students applying for student exchange program have to confirm with their home universities in advance.

The visiting students who are invited by specific programs organized by the schools or departments of Tsinghua Univeristy should select the program in the "Special Program" section. Only the applicants who are confirmed by the program organizers will be admitted.

3. Application Form Filling Up

Once the program is selected, an application form is created for the applicant to fill up.

In most fields of the form, there will be a tip to explain the meaning of the field. Please follow the instructions to make sure the contents you input meet the requirement.

The form can be saved as draft, or be submitted.

The saved draft is still editable and submittable, allowing for the applicants to prepare adequate information.

Upon submission, the system will automatically validate the form. If the contents do not meet the requirement literally, it will fail to submit and error messages are displayed to help the applicant correct the information in the form. If the form is submitted, the application reviewer will be able to review, and the applicant is not able to edit any more, unless it is discarded.

4. Viewing Applications

All the current applications created by the applicant will be displayed on the page of "My Applications", which will open after each logging in. Of each application, the status items display on the left, including the application number, application status, review comment, uploaded documents, admission result, and online payment status, etc. The operations available are listed on the right.

The applications made in previous semesters and not admitted will not be displayed.

5. Online Document Submission

Some programs accept online document submission. The "Upload Documents" button will appear on the right of the application status.

Many of the documents required to upload are scan copies of files, such as degree certificate, transcript, and recommendation letter, etc. For these kinds of documents, the scan copies must be captured by professional scanner or Xerox machine, with a resolution of over 300 ppi. The documents pictured by camera or mobile phone are not qualified.

Draft: the application form has not been submitted for review.

Submitted: the applicatino form has been submitted, but the program coordinators have not reviewed it.

Unqualified: the application form has been reviewed, but it fails because some of the items are not correctly provided. Usually, there will be a review comment indicating the item which needs further amendment.

In this step, with the qualified identification photo if required, the applicant may download the application form in PDF format and print it as the official application form on paper, which is required for admission with the applicant's signature.

Notice: This status (qualified) does NOT mean that the applicant is admitted. It means that the basic information is adequate to make an application form. The application form and other supporting documents will be used in further examination for admission.

Completed: most programs request the applicant to send paper documents when the application is qualified. In this case, the application will be marked as completed when the paper documents are received and confirmed. Please see the instructions for specific program in details.
